About the event
There is tremendous value in being known and understood. One aspect of being known is connecting with our cultural history and past. “Nakumbuka” is a Kiswahili word that means "I remember." Nakumbuka Day is the name given to the annual day of observance of the Maafa. Nakumbuka Day Observance Ceremony is an opportunity to examine directly the dehumanizing reality of the enslavement experience and to honor African ancestors who resisted and/or died during this process through the lens of personhood. As their personhood is restored, our hope is to further the collective healing of African-descended ceremony participants.
